Huge Qatar boost for Goodwood

Goodwood 250 wideGoodwood Racecourse and Qatar have entered into a ten-year sponsorship deal, with Glorious Goodwood now rebranded as the Qatar Goodwood Festival.

The five-day festival will receive significant prize-money boosts for its big prizes, with the Group 1 Qatar Sussex Stakes set to carry total prize-money of £1 million from 2015, a rise of £700,000 from this year.

Total prize-money for the fixture will soar to £4.5 million, with over £2 million being invested into the eight key races at Glorious Goodwood.

The Qatar Nassau Stakes will now be worth £600,000, (from £200,000) while the Lennox Stakes, Goodwood Cup and King George Stakes have all been upped to £300,000.

In addition Qatar have agreed that if any current Group 2 race achieves Group 1 status the prize-money fund will rise to at least £500,000.

Prize funds for the Vintage Stakes and Richmond Stakes will also rise to £200,000.

Last season there was anger when the Stewards' Cup was run as the 32Red Cup, but the title has been reinstated for next year's festival, with total prize-money of £250,000 (from £100,000), while the consolation race will be worth £75,000.

Champion trainer Richard Hannon, who along with his father has enjoyed so much success at the track, said: “This new Qatari sponsorship is absolutely fantastic news for British horseracing, and in particular Goodwood. We have always had plenty of runners going to Glorious Goodwood and this will only encourage us to target the race meeting more and more.”
