What ownership means to me - Jennifer’s Story
This National Racehorse Week, we’re celebrating the different ways owners connect with their horses. For ROA member Jennifer Nash, ownership is something she never imagined would be part of her life, until a chance visit to a stud changed everything.
“My father, who passed away recently at 96, was born the youngest of 10 in Lambourn. My mother, who died 15 years ago, was the youngest of six in Kingsclere. As a result, my childhood was always spent around racehorses, but from the ‘cheap seats.’ I never thought ownership would be possible for me”.
That changed ten years ago when Jennifer’s neighbour asked her to join her on a visit to Mildmay Stud to look at some foals, and finding the stunning foals to hard to resist, she took a 10% share in both - and that was the beginning of her ownership journey.
Jennifer’s first runner was Perfect Angel who she owned a share in and who went on to win at Glorious Goodwood. “I was so happy, I cried!” Jennifer recalls. “Here we are in the winners’ enclosure - I’m far left in the green jacket”!
Since then, Jennifer has continued her journey as an owner through small syndicates . “My summer social life revolves around the racecourse. I would recommend it to anyone.”
For Jennifer, racehorses bring joy, pride, and a vibrant sense of community, a fitting reminder during National Racehorse Week of the many ways horses enrich our lives.
