Behind the Scenes at George Baker’s Downs House
On a glorious summer morning, around 20 ROA members enjoyed an exclusive behind-the-scenes visit to George Baker’s historic Downs House, hosted by ROA event partner Venatour, alongside the ROA’s Sarah Holton.
Set in the heart of Epsom Downs, Downs House has been completely rebuilt in recent years and is now a modern facility stabling 52 horses. Among its impressive features is the largest horsewalker in the UK, a testament to the yard’s commitment to providing top-class training conditions.
Assistant trainer Barry Murphy led the group on a guided tour, sharing his in-depth knowledge and answering questions from the enthusiastic visitors. The morning began in the stables, where members met some of the yard’s current stars, including Bahrain Grade 1 winner Desert Cop, prolific five-time 2025 winner Beauld As Brass, and the hugely popular Get It. The latter added this year’s Wokingham Stakes at Royal Ascot to his Stewards’ Cup success of 2024, underlining his remarkable consistency.

Members were then treated to watching second and third lots pull out and exercise. It was fascinating to see the different personalities and work ethics on show – especially Get It, who apparently only has two speeds; slow and very fast! To watch him slowly mooch up the gallops you would never have guessed that he has amassed well over £100,000 in prize money already this year.
The ROA and its members extend their thanks to George Baker and his team for their warm welcome, and to Venatour for helping to make this special morning possible. Experiences like these are a unique benefit of ROA membership, providing members with an insider’s view of the dedication, expertise, and care that underpin success on the racecourse.
