World Pool Moment of the Year Finalists Announced

11 October 2022

Ahead of QIPCO British Champions Day, the four finalists have been announced for World Pool Moment of the Year.

The winning member of racing staff will be selected by a public vote which is now open until 12 noon on Thursday 13th October. All four finalists will attend QIPCO British Champions Day at Ascot Racecourse with friends and family and be part of a presentation in the paddock at 12.45pm. The winner will receive £34,000 to be shared with all members of racing staff in their yard.

The four finalists have been narrowed down from a selection of 16 from each World Pool day across the 2022 season. The 16 World Pool “Moment of the Day” winners were selected by an industry representative and each received £1,000 and a bottle of champagne. Winners were based on a range of criteria, including a wide-margin winner; a winner from an unlikely position; an extraordinary turn of foot at any point in the race; an above expectation performance by an outsider; or a human or equine interest story.

The four World Pool Moment of the Year finalists are:

  • Reg Todd led up Dark Shift to win the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot on Wednesday 15th June. Reg has worked for Charlie Hills for over 30 years, and this was his first time leading up a Royal Ascot winner.
  • Ricky Hall led up Baaeed when he recorded his stunning tenth consecutive win in the Juddmonte International at York on Wednesday 17th August.
  • Annabel Willis led up Alpinista when she recorded her seventh consecutive win with a brilliant performance in the Darley Yorkshire Oaks at York on Thursday 18th August.
  • Satrejeet Jhingree led up Highfield Princess who landed her second Group 1 in the Numthorpe Stakes at York on Friday 19th August.

These four finalists were selected by an industry panel made up of Michael Fitzsimmons, Hong Kong Jockey Club’s Executive Director of Wagering; Alex Frost, UK Tote Group's Chief Executive; Alex Hammond, Sky Sports Racing Presenter; and Nick Luck, Racing TV Presenter.

Members of the public in the UK can vote for their selection of World Pool Moment of the Year via Racing TV and Ascot Racecourse:

Racing TV: https://www.racingtv.com/worldpool
Ascot Racecourse: https://www.ascot.com/worldpoolvote

There is one vote per person with votes across the three platforms added together to produce the winner once voting closes at 12 noon on Thursday 13th October.

Alex Frost, Chief Executive of the UK Tote Group, said: “Together with the Hong Kong Jockey Club, Racecourse Media Group and partner racecourses, we are delighted to have launched World Pool Moment of the Year for 2022. It is fantastic to be able to recognise and reward the incredible work of racing staff who look after the equine superstars we have all enjoyed watching throughout the season on World Pool days.

“Congratulations to all 16 members of racing staff who were voted World Pool Moment of the Day throughout the summer. We look forward to recognising all four finalists on QIPCO British Champions Day and crowning the winning member of racing staff who receives £34,000 to share with their colleagues.”
