We are delighted to welcome Owners to Chelmsford City Racecourse (CCR) and trust that all our facilities meet our guests’ expectations. The racecourse sets out to be flexible and accommodating to all Owners’ requests and we will do our utmost to provide true Essex hospitality to ensure a memorable day.
We are also fully committed to prize-money at CCR and in recent years have made Executive contributions which are easily the highest average per fixture of all the All-Weather venues, and ranks third of all those flat tracks which do not stage Group 1 races. The racing surface is now in its seventh year of use since installation and has been further enhanced with £600,000 of investment since 2015.

Track Talk Updates:
By Road: Chelmsford City Racecourse is situated in Great Leighs, 5 miles north of Chelmsford in the heart of Essex. Surrounded by picturesque countryside, the 150+ acre racecourse site has excellent transport links via the A131, A120 and M11. Owners' car parking is immediately adjacent to the A131 Northbound dual carriageway and is free.
A buggy service is available for guests with accessibility requirements. Please see our dedicated website page or call us on 01245 360300 for full accessibility details and parking assistance for owners who are blue badge holders.
By train: from London to Chelmsford run from Liverpool Street station regularly or the Stansted Express train to Stansted Airport, again from Liverpool Street station is also an option.
The racecourse is approximately a 20 minute taxi ride from Chelmsford railway station and Stansted Airport.
Chelmsford City currently have an allocation of four badges per runner.
Additional badges can be applied for – contact the course directly for this. Any regional restrictions, the number of other owners attending on the day, and the “rule of six” will be factors influencing if your request can be accommodated.
Owners who live in an area currently under regional or local restrictions are reminded to follow the Government advice in that area.
Please also check your emails from PASS and the racecourse website for further updates on badge allocation and specific attendance protocols.
We are delighted to be able to welcome back 4 owners per runner to Chelmsford City Racecourse (CCR) in line with the Government guidance for elite sports grounds, and hope you’ll enjoy seeing your horse in action again, albeit still “behind closed doors”.
We have had to re-purpose a lot of our facilities at the track to meet the necessary Covid-19 requirements, but please be assured that we are doing our very best to enable you to have a great and safe day out, despite the current operational limitations that we have to follow.
Arrival At Chelmsford City Racecourse - All owners must arrive and park up at the main ticket office car park next to the A131 Northbound (ie towards Braintree) dual-carriageway. There is no other access for owners to the racecourse.
At the main entrance gates please follow the signage for owners (ie turn immediately right) to the dedicated owners' parking area and park up. Please wear your face covering on arrival and a steward will then indicate the short walking route to the usual ticket office Owners desk. After screening/ID check/accreditation at the ticket office, please continue on foot along the pedestrian route, through the tunnel and into the racecourse proper. We ask that you keep to the left along this route, in line with the signage and social distancing guidance. A buggy service is available if required.
"Owners' Zone" - Unfortunately, we are not currently able to offer you the usual Owners' facilities in either the ground floor marquee or the first-floor room overlooking the parade ring. These are both needed for essential operational purposes at present. However, we have created a dedicated Owners' Zone for you based in the ground floor of the main grandstand as you complete the walk under the track and into the racecourse infield.
This area is usually the Fairwood restaurant overlooking the winning line. Access to this facility is for Owners only and via the marked side entrance of the building (not the grandstand lobby entrance). This re-purposed area, together with the exterior trackside viewing steppings, will be your key location for the duration of your stay. Televisions and the big screen will all be in use as normal and our Owners Liaison Representatives will be in attendance. Printed A3 racecards will also be provided. We are also able to now provide some limited betting facilities on an ongoing trial basis.
Under current requirements the facility will have a specified capacity and sanitising facilities throughout. Government social distancing will continue to apply here and our team will review the situation throughout the day for everyone’s safety. Please wear a face covering at all times indoors (unless eating or drinking) Thank you in advance for your assistance with this.
Food and Drink - We are pleased to be able to expand our food/drink options for you since owners returned to CCR in July, although the service in the Owners’ Zone will remain a stream-lined one in the context of current restrictions. A complimentary three course set menu will now be provided and sandwiches are also available.
Bottled water, tea and coffee will also be offered and a non-draught, card-transactions only bar will be open. A welcome drink will be provided with our compliments on arrival.
On Course Liaison With Trainer/Jockey - Whilst owner access into pre-parade or parade rings is not currently permitted, we are able to facilitate post-race owner/trainer/jockey debriefs in a designated Owners Zone area along the outside of the parade ring perimeter rail (from the winner's sign anti-clockwise along the north bend of the parade ring). Our Owners Liaison representatives will coordinate the marked route from the grandstand facility to the parade ring perimeter. Please mention this to your trainer/jockey in advance so that they can arrange to speak with you after the race from within the parade ring across from your Zone.
Winners’ Presentation Area - Winning owners will have a winner’s photo taken from a position outside the parade ring perimeter rail opposite the winner’s sign. This will be within the debrief area of the Owners’ Zone. The usual video brochure and memento will also be available in a temporary winning connections area.
