TBA launches new breeder phone consultation service

The Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association (TBA) has introduced a new FREE telephone consultation service to support racehorse filly and mare owners, those looking to purchase a broodmare or any interested parties who are considering taking their first steps into thoroughbred breeding at any level.

As part of the TBA’s work to develop a pipeline of new breeders, eligible owners and interested newcomers will be able to book a free 30-minute telephone consultation with expert bloodstock professional, Joe Grimwade.

The informal one-to-one sessions will provide prospective breeders with an opportunity to ask questions about key aspects of getting started in breeding, from topline analysis on whether their race filly is suitable for breeding, impartial support around key considerations when selecting a suitable stallion along with practical advice, available resources and where to find them.

Joe will provide personalised advice and where appropriate will signpost participants towards relevant TBA and TB-Ed resources including the comprehensive Broodmare Ownership Guide, educational courses and other useful industry information.

The initiative forms part of the TBA’s wider commitment to making thoroughbred breeding more accessible, ensuring those considering entering the sector for the first time can access practical, trusted advice from the outset and in collaboration with the ROA.

Naomi Mellor commented: “We know from speaking to new and prospective breeders that those first steps into breeding can sometimes feel difficult to navigate. This initiative is about making that entry point clearer and more accessible but importantly ensuring new entrants are breeding smartly.  

“We have already piloted a couple of sessions and feedback has been extremely positive, but importantly we hope the service will help inform how we develop our wider offer for new breeders, whether through education, events, resources or further advice. Our aim is to ensure people have the right support at each stage of what we know can be an incredibly rewarding journey and that we are breeding the best possible thoroughbreds.”

Joe Grimwade commented: “These consultations are designed to give people a straightforward opportunity to ask the practical questions that arise when considering breeding for the first time.

“That might include whether a filly or mare is suitable for breeding, understanding the likely costs involved, how to approach stallion selection or simply knowing what the next step should be. The aim is to provide impartial, practical advice and point people towards the right information and expertise to help them move forward with confidence. 

“There is a huge amount of help available to breeders - from the TBA and other sources - and we want to ensure people know where to find and how to use it".
