Overview

From racehorse to riding horse. The new ROA member visit, taking place on Wednesday 4th September will show the lucky attendees exactly that.

The morning will be spent at Brian Ellison’s yard in Malton, North Yorkshire, where he has trained for the last 17 years.  Spring Cottage Stables is currently home to over 100 horses, including the instantly recognisable and well-loved Top Notch Tonto, high-class dual-purpose horse Seamour and multiple Graded-winner Definitly Red.

Following the behind-the-scenes tour members will then make their way to local racehorse retraining centre New Beginnings.  York-based Retraining of Racehorses charity New Beginnings is one of the younger retraining centres, having been set up in 2010 and only becoming a registered charity in 2016.  Whilst they retrain most of the horses that pass through their hands for a second career outside of racing New Beginnings does have two permanent residents – Golden Hello and the wonderful Mister McGoldrick, who many will remember for his 66/1 win at the 2008 Cheltenham Festival.

Tickets for this event cost just £10 per person, and ROA members wishing to book can call the office on 0207 152 0200, or by visiting roa.co.uk/events.
