Equine Herpes Virus outbreak linked to Showjumping in Europe

06 March 2021

The BHA would like to make trainers and industry participants aware of an outbreak of Equine Herpes Virus (EHV-1), which originated in Valencia at a Showjumping tour and has already resulted in outbreaks in at least three other countries in Europe.

British Showjumping published an advice note on Tuesday 2 March 2021, which was prepared by members of the BEF Equine Infectious Disease Advisory Group.

EHV is endemic in Europe and Great Britain. At present, the BHA is not aware of any outbreaks of neurological EHV in Thoroughbreds in Europe. However, we urge all trainers to be vigilant, particularly those who may have links with Showjumping.

We are continuing to closely monitor the situation, and are liaising with the IHRB and France Galop, and the BEF.

At present, we have no pre-travel testing requirements for French or Irish runners.
